Alan Shearer: No One Stepped Up; Southgate Fails to Extract Best from Players

In the second match of the European Cup C Group, England’s performance was lackluster, ending in a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Following the game, football legend Alan Shearer criticized the attacking prowess of the English players in an interview.

Shearer said, “You could see the players collapsing on the pitch after the match, seemingly exhausted, which isn’t acceptable. There was no energy, no rhythm, and it took until the final 10-15 minutes for any real counterattacks. Denmark actually played better and deserved the win. The English players were far from their best – not because they didn’t try, but there’s still significant room for improvement in terms of their abilities.”

“Bellingham had no impact today, he failed to contribute to the team. Foden didn’t make a difference either. Kane’s goal was there, but he didn’t create more opportunities. Watkins’ introduction saw the defenders retreat, with no one pushing forward. Right now, Southgate isn’t getting the best out of everyone,” added Shearer.

  • Ferdinand echoed these sentiments, “This England side was mediocre, and Denmark dominated. England chose a defensive approach that left them under pressure. It’s crucial to understand whether this is a tactical directive from the coach or if they were genuinely pushed into such a situation by their opponents.”
