Bang! Italian Derby D'Italy Sees Highest Goal Total in Years

In the early hours of October 28, Inter Milan and Juventus drew 4-4, a match that will be etched in history: in the history of the Italian Derby (considering only Serie A matches), there have been only two other instances where the total number of goals reached or exceeded eight, the last time being in 1961.

This match was filled with passion and mistakes, delivering a long-awaited thrilling encounter for the fans. Statistically, this game between Inter Milan and Juventus is the third time in Serie A history that the two teams combined to score at least eight goals (excluding the 1975 Coppa Italia match where Juventus defeated Inter Milan 6-2).

Previously in Serie A, such a high goal total in the Derby d’Italia had occurred only twice, both times long ago.

The first instance was on January 17, 1932, when Juventus won 6-2 against Inter Milan at home. In that match, Mario scored twice, while Ferrari, Munarati, Orsi, and Vecchina each contributed a goal for Juventus; for Inter Milan, Schiavio and De Maria each scored once.

The second instance was on June 10, 1961, also in Turin. Due to the previous match being canceled because of fan intrusion, Inter Milan fielded a youth team for the replay, resulting in a lopsided 9-1 victory for Juventus. In this replay, Sivori scored six goals, while Riva, Nicolè, and Mora each added one; Inter Milan’s sole goal was scored by Mazzola.

Thus, before this 4-4 draw, it had been a full 63 years since an Italian Derby of such high scoring was witnessed. This match not only provided unforgettable memories for the fans but also left a significant mark in football history.
