In last night’s first round of the Olympic women’s football group stage matches, the world number one Spanish women’s team staged a 2-1 comeback against the world number seven Japanese women’s team.
Spanish Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí contributed a goal and an assist in the match and was named Player of the Match. She spoke to reporters in the mixed interview zone after the game.
When asked about her goal changing the course of the game, Bonmatí said, “I’m happy with my goal, but most importantly, I’m happy with the victory.”
“Matches against the Japanese women’s team are always special,” Bonmatí remarked when asked about avenging the loss to Japan. “Last year in the World Cup, they scored four goals against us.”
In the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Spanish women’s team defeated England and ultimately won the World Cup title. However, during the group stage, they suffered a 0-4 loss to Japan, which was their biggest defeat in the tournament and in recent years.
