On October 29, Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, breaking a pattern that had held since the turn of the century: whenever Real Madrid won the Champions League, one of their players would win the Ballon d’Or. The last time Real Madrid won the Champions League without a player winning the Ballon d’Or was back in 1998.
Since the turn of the millennium, every year Real Madrid won the Champions League, one of their players invariably won the Ballon d’Or. Since 2000, the years Real Madrid won the Champions League and the corresponding Ballon d’Or winners were: Figo (2000), Ronaldo (2002), Cristiano Ronaldo (2014), Cristiano Ronaldo (2016), Cristiano Ronaldo (2017), Modric (2018), and Benzema (2022). All of these players were Real Madrid players at the time. The last time Real Madrid won the Champions League without a player winning the Ballon d’Or was in 1998 (Zidane).
In the previous seven times Real Madrid won the Champions League, a player from their squad always won the Ballon d’Or that year. This pattern has now been broken.
