On October 26, former Milan and Juventus manager Fabio Capello gave an interview in which he discussed the issues facing the development of Italian football.
Capello stated: “Italian football is developing too slowly. We find ourselves in trouble when teams can run, even if their technique is not as good as ours. The excessive ball possession we see in Italy is useless; we need more speed and passion.”
He also spoke about Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, noting that Italian football is now imitating the Spanish coach.
Capello added: “We are imitating Guardiola, but it’s too late. What we have been doing is ineffective ball possession, passing and controlling the ball without any purpose. This has led to our early exit from the European Championship. We need to play more directly and efficiently.”
