Di Canio Criticizes Leao and Theo: They Would Have Gotten Beaten in Our Time

Recently, AC Milan players Leao and Theo have sparked controversy due to an incident during a match. During AC Milan’s away game against Lazio, the two chose to stay away from Coach Fonseca and other teammates during a hydration break, not listening to tactical instructions, which led to speculation about discord between the coach and the players.

Former Lazio player Paolo Di Canio expressed his views on Italian television, considering the behavior of Leao and Theo as shameful. Di Canio said, “We are talking about serious matters. In my view, it is shameful. I hear people saying they are kids and that’s how things are, but they earn 8 million euros annually at Milan and are team captains.”

“Even in amateur games played by friends, if someone were lazily lying around, I would say, ‘Hey, what are you doing? Come over here so we can talk.’ That’s a game where each person pays 10 euros to play. It’s shameful. The captain chatting idly, this is contempt for authority. In our time, teammates would pin them against the wall and give them a beating. This is shameful.”

The Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport stated that although Di Canio’s words were intermittent and not coherent, his meaning was very clear: he believes that other members of the locker room might be unhappy with Leao and Theo, and might even resort to physical punishment, because these two players did not align with their teammates during the team’s hydration break.
