On July 11, following Uruguay’s 0-1 loss to Colombia, a conflict broke out between players, including Núñez, and Colombian fans after the latter threatened the personal safety of Uruguayan international players’ families.
As the reasons for the confrontation became clearer, ESPN host Herculez Gomez took to social media to assert that Núñez had merely reacted as any normal person would.
Gomez wrote, “I don’t condone any violence either. But if your family was in danger during a football match, I think we’d all act decisively.”
“Núñez will gladly accept any consequences as long as it ensures his family’s safety. It’s truly sad how lacking security was at the game.”
