On July 2nd, former England international Gabby Agbonlahor advised Gareth Southgate to bench Harry Kane, claiming that Kane is ineffective on the field and that his goals are of little difficulty, which any player could score.
In the round of 16 of the Euros, England narrowly defeated Slovakia 2-1 after extra time to progress to the quarterfinals. Early in extra time, Kane scored the winning goal for England.
Nonetheless, Agbonlahor remains skeptical about Kane’s performance: “I watched the England game, and Kane was just standing in the middle. He wasn’t battling for the ball or bothering the opposition center backs. I’ve played as a lone striker many times in my career, so I know what’s expected. He should be moving around to create space for Bellingham and Foden. But he just stood there doing nothing.”
Agbonlahor argues that Kane’s extra-time goal was insignificant: “Watkins or Tony could have scored that header from that position too. It was an easy close-range header, something anyone could have put away. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
