Fonseca: Modern Football Is Like a Farce; Minimal Contact Results in Penalties

In the 7th round of the Serie A league, there were a total of three missed penalties. Pulisic’s goal couldn’t save the team, Theo was sent off in stoppage time, and AC Milan eventually lost 1-2 away to Fiorentina, ending their three-game winning streak in the league. After the game, AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca spoke to the media.

Fonseca said, “I love football, but I don’t want to contribute to this farce. Nowadays, everything is a penalty, whether it benefits us or not. Penalties are awarded for minimal contact, this isn’t football. I don’t want to delve into it further.”

“I think we performed well under this system previously, and Fiorentina didn’t create many chances. What we lacked was aggressiveness. In the first half, we conceded possession too easily on throw-ins and long balls. I told my players that this wasn’t a tactical issue but a lack of aggressiveness in both defense and attack.”

“When you miss two penalties, it’s difficult to win regardless of how many chances you create. I also felt the quality of crosses into the box wasn’t good enough.”

“Honestly, it’s hard to explain how Fiorentina scored those goals. We lacked decisiveness and weren’t as proactive in closing down spaces as we have been recently, which allowed Fiorentina to use long balls and win second balls.”

“Substituting Leao was my decision because I wanted to add depth with Okafor at that moment. Pulisic had muscle issues during the week, and I was concerned about aggravating them. I thought Chukwueze did well after coming on and created opportunities.”
