Former USMNT goalkeeper Howard, during a podcast appearance, spoke about the new USMNT head coach Pochettino. He believes that Pochettino is attempting to emulate Guardiola’s style of play, which he thinks will be difficult for him to lead the team successfully.
Howard believes that Guardiola’s system is not something every coach can replicate, and Pochettino should focus on building the team’s defensive capabilities. Regarding Guardiola, Howard stated: “What I think is happening in football today is that, from any perspective, Guardiola is ruining the sport. Guardiola’s tactical system is not something everyone can achieve, and so far, I’ve only seen three teams that can fit into Guardiola’s system.”
“The pinnacle of Pochettino’s career was his time at Tottenham, where their strength was defense. That Tottenham team had a solid defense, and they were continuously striving to improve their defensive skills. Therefore, I believe Pochettino should instill more determination in defense into the current USMNT players.”
