On July 7th, in the UEFA Euro quarterfinals, England will face Switzerland for a spot in the semifinals. Ahead of the match, England’s manager Gareth Southgate held a press conference.
About coaching England for 100 matches
Southgate: I’m very proud, but it’s the least significant thing this week. What truly matters is guiding England to the semifinals. In years to come, I’ll look back at this milestone with great pride. But right now, my focus is solely on the present.
About the team’s condition
Southgate: You want to play as well as possible. Every team wants to impress. Switzerland has given us tough games, and there are high expectations for England. The team looked different today in training, more fluid.
About Switzerland
Southgate: Switzerland have been excellent. They have talented players with a clear approach, which can cause problems for opponents. We need to raise our level.
About England’s tactics
Southgate: We’re constantly considering the best way to start matches. Switzerland often play with five at the back, sometimes switching to four. Their shape is clear. Our aim is to cause them problems while being aware of their threats. The Swiss are very capable of doing that now.
About motivation
Southgate: The longer the players stay here, the more confident they become, and the less external distractions affect them. We could be here for another 10 days. But as I told the team this morning, even if we’ve traveled a million miles, there will still be all sorts of noise around us, yet they’re excited to embrace every challenge.
