Statistics show that last season the Bundesliga achieved a revenue record of 5.24 billion euros, with an average of 39,000 spectators per game. In the 2nd Bundesliga, nearly 29,000 spectators attended each match, making it “the most attractive and valuable second division in Europe to date.”

However, this comes at the cost of a high standard of play in the league, as one traditional large club after another has dropped to the second tier, which the Bundesliga Association is not pleased about. A prime example is the old-established team Schalke 04 and Hamburg, whose matches have always been highly charged but have remained in the second division for a long time.
