German Media: No Room for a Loss Against Switzerland to Secure Top Spot and Avoid Spain or Italy

In the early hours of June 20, Germany secured their place in the Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Hungary in their second group match. German newspaper Bild analyzed potential opponents for the team in the Round of 16.

Bild pointed out that if Germany finishes first in their group, they will face the runner-up of Group C at 9 pm local time on June 29 (Saturday) in Dortmund. Currently, Denmark or Slovenia is more likely to occupy this position. England, as the team that defeated Serbia in the first round of group matches, is currently leading Group C, with Serbia at the bottom. However, these two teams could also be Germany’s opponents in the Round of 16.

If Germany finishes second in their group, they will play the second-placed team from Group B at 6 pm on June 29 (Saturday) at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Group B consists of Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Albania.

Given the current scenario, a path that would see Germany face the defending European champions, Italy, in the Round of 16 presents a formidable challenge. Of course, any of the other three teams could also emerge as Germany’s opponents.

This means that securing the group’s top spot is crucial for Germany’s progression in the tournament, allowing them to avoid strong opponents like Spain or Italy. To achieve this, a draw against Switzerland would be necessary, at the very least.

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich told Bild, “When we look at which team from another group we might face if we finish second, it’s very clear that we need to aim for first place. That’s our goal.”
