Girona and Others Eye Roberto as Barcelona Captain’s Contract Nears End

June 17 – According to the latest report from Spanish newspaper SPORT, several clubs, including Girona, have shown interest in Barcelona captain Sergio Roberto, whose contract with the club is set to expire on June 30. So far, no agreement has been reached for an extension, meaning he will become a free agent.

Former coach Xavi had previously valued the veteran player, and an agreement was in place with sporting director Deco for a renewal. However, following Xavi’s departure, the negotiations have stalled, with the club unable to assure Roberto’s registration, potentially leading the player and his agent to consider leaving upon contract expiration.

Girona’s sports director Quique Costas sees Roberto as a key reinforcement for the team’s squad depth, especially as they prepare for their UEFA Champions League campaign next season. Securing the midfielder on a free transfer would be a significant boost for the club.

Nonetheless, if Roberto does depart Barcelona, Girona could face competition. Portuguese side Porto has also expressed interest in the 32-year-old, appreciating his versatility. Another La Liga team, Valencia, has inquired about the situation with Sergio Roberto.
