The French team narrowly defeated Belgium 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals of this year’s European Championship. After the match, France’s vice-captain Antoine Griezmann praised the team’s performance and firmly dismissed external criticism.
France secured victory thanks to an own goal by Belgian center-back Vertonghen in the closing stages of the second half, but doubts still lingered. However, for Griezmann, it was time to savor the triumph. Speaking to beIN Sports, he emphasized, “A narrow win? Don’t underestimate it – it’s enough to get us into the quarters. Our defense was outstanding, and without a strong defense, you can’t go far.”
Deschamps’ France lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Griezmann deployed on the right wing, where he had an average outing. Nevertheless, he gave his all and strived to contribute. Addressing questions about his best position, Griezmann said, “It’s a new tactic, and we all need to adapt. I found out this morning that I’d play on the right, but I always serve the coach and the team, so I adapt. A personal sacrifice? No, that could be misunderstood. Wherever the coach wants me to play, I will play, but regardless of my position, I will give 100%. The coach knows where I prefer to play and that I always give my all. Everything I do is for Deschamps; he trusts me, and I’ll strive to repay that trust.”
