During the Euros, Spanish left-back Héctor Bellerín granted an exclusive interview to AS, where he revealed his admiration for Carles Puyol and named the match against Italy as one of the highlights of his career.
About how he defines himself
I always give my all. I’m energetic. I’m not someone who shines in statistics, but being here shows my value. After so many years and finally getting recognition, it’s pleasing.
About hearing fans chanting his name
You don’t hear it during the game, but when the ball goes out, you do. It’s amazing to know they remember you and your efforts.
About his football journey
I started with indoor soccer, then played 7-a-side for Espanyol before joining Barcelona as a youth player. Eventually, they signed me… it was a joy.
About his role in the national team
We have fantastic players, and I believe I can contribute offensively while first fulfilling defensive duties. Williams is capable on his own; he doesn’t need my help. It depends on the manager’s plans. I’ve played as a winger and even center-back at Brighton.
About favorite players
I love Puyol because he was a player without any particular specialty, yet he left everything on the pitch, making him world-class. Alaba has always been admired, especially when I was at Bayern. And Ronaldinho too, of course.
About Carvajal
We didn’t know each other well before, but he’s a great example. His daily approach to training is impressive. His attitude, despite having won six titles, remains fierce. His focus surprises me. I hope we win the Euros, and he becomes a Ballon d’Or candidate.
About the match against Italy
It was an incredible game. For me, it was one of my best performances. I hope it’s not the last great game for the national team.
