During ITV’s coverage of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, an awkward moment unfolded as Postecoglou found himself having to address criticism of his club Tottenham just minutes into his debut as a commentator.
After a break following the season, Postecoglou joined Karen Carney, Ian Wright, and presenter Laura Woods in the studio. The quartet were watching the Group E match between Belgium and Romania, with Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin starting for the latter. However, as the panel discussed John Stones’ role for England, Spurs’ performance against Manchester City came up. Stones’ impressive forays from defense, including against the London side, led to suggestions that his approach could be replicated at the international level.
Wright said, “I know what Karen was saying about John Stones and how good he is playing as a center-back pushing up, and I think he played best against Tottenham.” This prompted an uncomfortable “Thanks, brother” from Postecoglou, with Carney acknowledging the awkward situation, drawing laughter from all present.
Wright continued, “The thing is, he can do that at City because there’s a system in place. He knows exactly what he’s doing, and people know when he’s going to do it. Same with Phil Foden; he relies on that City system where he knows exactly what he’s doing, and at the moment, England doesn’t seem to have a clear attacking system.”
Postecoglou’s appearance was well-received by television viewers. One viewer tweeted, “No one is surprised by Postecoglou’s calmness and common sense in front of the ITV cameras. He’s been a TV pundit in Australia for a reason.”
Another viewer commented, “Postecoglou has made a fantastic impression. There’s a charm about him that I really like, and he’s a natural commentator.”
A third viewer remarked, “Postecoglou’s understanding of the game is miles above any other commentator we have on our TV screens.”
