Italy Loses Its Last Tradition, Conceding More Goals Than in Its Previous Title Run

On June 30, in the UEFA Euro Round of 16 match, Italy found itself trailing 0-2 against Switzerland early in the second half, putting the team on the brink of elimination. In this Euro tournament, Italy has already conceded five goals, surpassing the total number of goals it lost in its victorious 2020 Euro campaign (four goals).

Throughout this Euro competition, Italy has faced challenges. In the group stage opener against Bari Lammi, the team conceded a goal just 23 seconds into the game, setting a record for the fastest goal in Euro history. However, Italy managed to recover and won 2-1. In the second match, Italy suffered a 0-1 defeat against Spain. In the final group game, Italy drew 1-1 with Croatia thanks to a last-minute equalizer by Zaccagni, securing a 1-1 tie and advancing to the knockout stage as group runners-up with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss.

In the Round of 16 encounter versus Switzerland, Italy once again found itself down 0-2 shortly after halftime, conceding a total of five goals in this tournament.

In the 2020 Euro, Italy conceded only four goals throughout the entire event, which contributed to their championship victory. The current Italian team seems to have abandoned its former defensive prowess.
