Veteran Jesús Navas, currently with the Spanish national team at the Euros, recently granted an exclusive interview to As. He is one of the last remaining players from Spain’s “Golden Generation,” and he shared his thoughts on the team’s situation and his own feelings.
About Yeremy’s rise “My son is 11, and Yeremy is only 16, it’s hard to believe, but I enjoy playing alongside him. Yeremy is a grounded kid, always focused in training and matches. He has a strong desire to win, works hard, and is very confident. He and Nico Williams consistently break through defenses and make a big difference for the team.”
About interacting with young players “Some young players ask me how I manage to stay energetic and keep playing at my age. They see me as a mirror, someone they can learn from. They’re surprised by my condition.”
About coaches throughout his national team career “I made my debut under Vicente del Bosque, and it was a great experience. De la Fuente shares many similarities with Del Bosque, bringing new ideas. Being called up again after five years out, under Enrique, was a joy. Under De la Fuente, we won the Nations League, and the team is on the right path. The relationship between him and the players is close; he always wants to help in training and games, instilling confidence on the pitch.”
About the change in Spain’s playing style “What matters most is focusing on the present. Now we play more directly, with more options. Back then, we were unique, playing possession-based football, and it was beautiful. Now we still enjoy it, being effective against opponents.”
Thoughts as the last representative of the Golden Generation “It makes me feel good, but I train and work humbly, just like when I first joined the national team. I savor every day.”
About Spain’s Euro ambitions “We don’t think that far ahead. We must take it step by step, focusing on the match against Albania. Staying in the moment is the key to our success. We need to keep moving forward together.”
