Koeman: Barça’s Problem is Driving Out Messi, Xavi, and Me; They Should Respect Their Legends

On July 19, former Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman criticized his former club during an interview, particularly targeting the club’s management for their handling of Lionel Messi, Xavi, and himself.

Koeman stated, “I think the problem at Barça now is that Messi left, I left, and Xavi left… I believe they should learn to respect people, especially the club’s legends, which is far more important than going after a player in the transfer market.”

“In recent years, Barça has ceased to be one of the world’s top teams. The club has not been run well, and they keep discarding their legends. The issue lies with the board of directors, whose behavior is not right.”

Koeman also expressed his willingness to return to Barça in the future, but only if Joan Laporta is no longer the president: “I have two years left on my contract with the Netherlands national team. Returning to Barça is my dream, but then I don’t want to be a coach anymore; instead, I would like to take on another technical role under a different president.”

Furthermore, Koeman discussed Dutch international Frenkie de Jong’s injury issues at Barça: “He was always worried; he had a serious injury, yet Barça made him play in important matches without being fully recovered, even though he lacked match fitness and hadn’t done enough recovery training.”
