As the starting right-back for the French national team, Koundé sat down with Fox43 ahead of the Euro semi-final to delve into his role within the squad and the upcoming clash against Spain.
The French team has yet to score an open-play goal in this Euro tournament, seemingly far from their best form, but Koundé has consistently shone on the right flank. When asked if he had exchanged messages with his Barca teammate Gavi ahead of this epic Euro semi-final, Koundé said, “No, I didn’t send him a message, but I did have a conversation with Pedri about injuries. Gavi’s threat? He is certainly a major source of danger, but I’d say the whole Spanish team is dangerous.”
In elaborating on this young Spanish prodigy, Koundé recalled the first time he trained with Gavi: “Yes, he’s incredible. I think it’s remarkable that at his age, he’s had such a successful season and carries all the hopes and pressure of an entire nation.”
Earlier this week, during France’s penalty shootout against Portugal, Koundé calmly took on the responsibility of taking a penalty, contributing to France’s victory. Speaking about the experience of being tasked with penalty duties, Koundé said, “When I was named to take a penalty, I felt no nerves at all and was full of confidence because I’ve practiced penalties many times at Barcelona and with the French team. I feel great in this Euro, with the trust of the coach and my teammates. I always try to do my best, and so far, everything has gone well.”
