La Liga President: Barcelona's Total Salary Reduced by Millions, Summer Signings to be Easier

On Wednesday, Spanish Football League (La Liga) President Javier Tebas delivered a keynote speech titled “La Liga’s Global Expansion” at the 2024 Mexico Sports Summit. He stated that for the financially struggling FC Barcelona, this year might be the best in recent years, with significant reductions in the team’s total salary, making it easier to sign new players.

Tebas pointed out, “Compared to previous years, Barcelona will face a smoother process in signing players. They have clearly understood the need to adhere to financial fair play regulations when bringing in new talent, and they have done an excellent job in this regard. The club is gradually recovering from its economic difficulties, and we look forward to seeing them address the remaining issues and achieve their key transfer objectives.”

The La Liga president also praised Barcelona’s efforts in reducing the first team’s overall wage bill.

Tebas revealed, “There’s an interesting statistic: three years ago, Barcelona’s first team salaries stood at €650 million, but they have now been reduced to €450 million, a decrease of €200 million. This has made Barcelona’s salary structure more rational, comparable to Real Madrid’s. However, Real Madrid’s consistent financial management has enabled them to consistently sign their desired players.”

Barcelona has already targeted Spanish international Nico Williams as a key signing, although they are facing competition from Chelsea. In order to secure Williams, Barcelona will need to offload players first.
