The Cologne club announced that legendary coach Daum, who coached in the Bundesliga for many years, passed away due to illness at the age of 70.
Over the years, he was one of the most enigmatic coaches in professional football. Since the fall of 2022, Daum had been battling illness. He initially withdrew from public view, but soon after, things changed. Daum gave interviews again and appeared on talk shows. “Cancer chose the wrong body,” this was his central message. Daum hoped to encourage others with his fighting spirit.
Daum had coached four Bundesliga teams: Cologne, Stuttgart, Leverkusen, and Frankfurt. In 1992, he led Stuttgart to the Bundesliga title. Additionally, he brought Cologne to second place twice in the Bundesliga and achieved three Bundesliga runner-up finishes with Leverkusen.
