With the 2024 Euros on the horizon, former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has expressed his preference for France over England. Speaking in an interview, Lehmann suggested that Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller remain crucial to Germany’s chances, while the omission of Mats Hummels might prove to be an error.
Lehmann emphasized the impact of home-field advantage, stating, “Having the whole nation behind us is fantastic, as we experienced in the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals against Argentina in Berlin.”
Regarding current Germany number one Neuer, Lehmann praised his abilities, saying, “Neuer is still one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Despite past errors, it’s highly unlikely he’ll make mistakes consistently in the Euros.”
Hummels’ absence from the Euro squad, despite his strong showing in the Champions League, drew criticism from Lehmann. “If two central defenders reach the Champions League final together, and one doesn’t make the Euros squad, that’s a mistake. If it were up to me, I’d have taken both Hummels and Schlotterbeck. However, Germany has opted for Rudiger, and the coach will need to manage this well.”
On the position of Joshua Kimmich, Lehmann believes he should play in midfield rather than at right-back, with Jan Breyer being the better choice for that role, though not selected.
In the battle between Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug, Lehmann sees them as evenly matched. Discussing veteran Müller, he highlighted his importance, saying, “Müller remains one of the smartest players, knowing exactly what’s needed when he comes on. He always appears in the most dangerous positions.”
While acknowledging England’s attacking prowess, including players like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Harry Kane, Lehmann pointed out their defensive vulnerabilities and lack of a top goalkeeper. As a result, he leans towards France as a stronger title contender.
