On June 18, ahead of Portugal’s Euro tournament, former Portuguese soccer star Luis Figo, now 51, discussed the national team’s prospects, stating, “Portugal is a strong team, they have the confidence to win, so why not?”
In his role as an ambassador for Portugal’s joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, Figo recently attended related events and spoke about his past experiences with the Portuguese national team and his thoughts on their Euro prospects.
“There’s nothing more pleasing than representing your country on the international stage,” Figo said. “I never took wearing the Portugal jersey for granted. I was part of the national team from a young age, and we had great success, winning the UEFA U-16 European Championship and the FIFA U-20 World Cup. That was a real breakthrough moment for Portuguese football. Every match was special, an opportunity to defend our nation’s honor, and I was fortunate to participate in three Euros and two World Cups, each a unique and unforgettable moment.”
Regarding this edition of the Euro, Figo commented, “The future of Portuguese football is bright. The current generation of players is immensely talented, and thanks to excellent youth development work across the country, we have a pool of genuinely gifted young players. The current national team is a genuine force, with a good balance between experienced players and youngsters who are just establishing themselves at international level.”
“As with the World Cup, the outcome often depends on small details, making it difficult to predict, but Portugal has the confidence to lift the trophy – why not? I’m really looking forward to seeing how far they can go,” Figo added.
