Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has stated that although the team could “blame the manager and tactics,” the players “must do better,” as manager Erik ten Hag faces increasing pressure.
The team at Old Trafford has won two, drawn one, and lost three of their six Premier League games this season, currently sitting in 14th place. They will face Aston Villa away on Sunday.
Maguire said, “This is my sixth season here, and I know what it means. I know you’ll go through tough times, and everyone will pile pressure on you. We’ve shown over the past few seasons that when we play well, we can beat anyone. The issue is consistency, and we need to start showing that.”
Under Ten Hag’s management, they have conceded three or more goals in 24 matches. Maguire added, “That’s clearly not good enough, and we certainly need to do more. But as a player, it’s easy to blame your teammates or criticize the manager and tactics. In reality, you must first look at yourself, take responsibility, and everyone needs to do better in these moments.”
“I believe we are performing better than last season, but the results haven’t shown that yet. We need to find belief within ourselves and draw confidence from our performance at Villa Park last season. Obviously, our performance against Tottenham was really poor. Apart from that, I think we deserve more points. But that’s not the case, so we need to change this starting from Sunday. It’s a tough game, but it’s a great venue for a match.”
