Mail Column: UEFA Cannot Be Said to Have Not Spared Any Effort, But Has Failed to Convince Everyone That the New Format is Better

This year’s new season of the Champions League has adopted the latest format. UEFA’s intention in changing the format was to make the schedule fairer and to allow everyone to see more clashes between top clubs; however, so far, fans have not shown a noticeably greater interest in the new format.

The new format uses a completely disruptive approach. The expanded Champions League will feature 36 teams, and the new format has raised concerns: the Champions League only has one champion, with now as many as 36 teams participating, will it add too many meaningless matches? Will the final results be satisfactory?

In fact, UEFA has put in a lot of effort for the new format, spending a great deal of thought, such as using the latest technology supercomputers for the draw. However, when Cristiano Ronaldo repeatedly pressed the button, everything seemed so awkward. For example, performances were arranged at the draw ceremony, but everyone’s focus was on the format itself, and these performances were referred to by fans as “strange events.”

UEFA’s organization of this draw ceremony cannot be said to have spared any effort, but it has failed to alleviate people’s concerns about the new season’s Champions League matches.
