On August 23rd, in the first leg of the Europa Conference League playoff, Chelsea comfortably won 2-0 at home against Servette, taking a favorable position for qualification. The fans were not satisfied with the team’s performance, while head coach Maresca defended his tactical approach.
Maresca talked about Palmer’s situation: “Palmer felt a bit uncomfortable on the pitch, but it doesn’t seem serious. We have examined him and found nothing wrong. Hopefully, he will be able to participate normally in the league game this weekend.”
Maresca, addressing the boos from the fans, said: “When leading 2-0, maintaining possession is undoubtedly the right choice. Our tactical thinking was correct, though there might have been some issues with its execution. In the last 10-15 minutes of the match, we successfully kept possession in our half, but we should have maintained pressure by controlling the ball in the opponent’s half. I understand the fans’ disappointment, but what matters most is that we won, and we did so by rotating nine players, giving young players valuable experience.”
Maresca gave an overall evaluation of Chelsea’s performance: “At the beginning of the match, we played very aggressively, creating many opportunities, and performed well for a period. However, sometimes we struggled, and needed to manage the game better. Of course, these are all normal occurrences.”
