Milano Sport: Italy to undergo rapid rejuvenation as several veterans and underperforming internationals bid farewell to the national team

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, following a disappointing defense of their Euro title, Italy’s national team coach, Spalletti, is set to initiate a major squad overhaul in the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches and the start of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers in September.

Spalletti mentioned in his post-match press conference on Sunday that he plans to lower the team’s average age, suggesting that some of the more experienced players from Euro 2024 could be dropped to make way for fresh talent. As per Monday’s report in Gazzetta dello Sport, players like 32-year-old Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, 31-year-old AS Roma winger Salah, and 34-year-old Inter Milan defender Darmian might not feature in the new Italy setup.

Additionally, following the team’s European disappointment, there are doubts over the international futures of players such as Roma’s Cristante and Manchini, along with Napoli captain Di Lorenzo, whose performances were particularly lackluster in the group stage loss against Spain.

In Spalletti’s mind, a blueprint for the next Azzurri squad is already forming, with many players vying for selection. One notable example is Newcastle United midfielder Tonali, who will return from suspension just eight days before the new Nations League season begins at the end of August. Others, like Juventus’ Locatelli, Galatasaray forward Zaniolo, and Atlanta defender Scalvini (who missed Euro 2024 due to injury), are also waiting for the call-up.

The Italian sports daily also mentions a small group of young talents ready for their chance. Udinese’s Udoh, a defender who missed Euro 2024 through injury, Fiorentina’s Caicedo, and Bologna’s Fabian are eager to prove themselves. AC Milan’s emerging talent, Kamalda, will likely attract significant attention from fans, but he first needs to establish himself at Milan and secure regular playing time. Similarly, Chelsea’s Casadei and Empoli’s Fazzi are also under consideration.
