Newcastle’s limited activity in the summer window has caused discontent among fans. The club’s new sporting director, Paul Mitchell, responded to fans by stating that Newcastle’s transfer strategy should not be one of constant spending, as this could eventually lead to the club being penalized, similar to certain other clubs.
Newcastle have now gone two consecutive windows without strengthening their starting lineup, only signing Vlahovic and Oscura, while Luis Holt’s loan move was made permanent, a deal that had been agreed upon earlier. Despite spending a month pursuing Mark Guehi, they ultimately gave up when faced with Crystal Palace’s asking price of £65 million.
In response to the disappointing summer window, Paul Mitchell said, “Perhaps I arrived at the wrong time, there are mistakes in our overall strategy, but as managers of the club, we can’t keep spending, spending, and spending.”
Paul Mitchell emphasized that continuous spending could very likely put Newcastle in a position where they face penalties, “I don’t think our fans want to see us being penalized like some teams were last season.”
Paul Mitchell believes that Newcastle needs to focus on building their scouting network moving forward, and make transfers based on the needs of manager Eddie Howe. Moreover, Paul Mitchell revealed that he had met with the club’s owners, and the Saudi financiers fully agree with the current transfer strategy, “They can see the club growing, and it’s not just through spending money; they want us to be the best in every aspect.”
