Not Everyone Supports Naturalization! Indonesian Fans Protest FA’s Extensive Naturalization of Players with Banners

According to Southeast Asian media SOHA, on the afternoon of October 1st, a group of Indonesian fans hung protest banners on a pedestrian overpass in Jakarta, opposing the naturalization policy promoted by the Indonesian Football Association. According to reports, these fans are dissatisfied with the FA’s naturalization of several foreign players of Indonesian descent.

The text on the banner clearly conveyed their stance: “We do not support naturalization. We want to give young players opportunities and socialize Indonesian football.”

Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Rano Karno also expressed similar views during an interview: “While naturalization is sometimes necessary in top-level sports competitions, this process should follow certain mechanisms rather than being simply expedited.”

In addition to Rano, several experts have criticized the FA’s large-scale naturalization plan, expressing concerns that it could undermine the uniqueness of Indonesian football and reduce opportunities for the growth of local young players.

However, Shin Tae-yong, the current head coach of the Indonesian national team, and the FA have a more open attitude. They are actively seeking to naturalize overseas players of Indonesian descent to enhance the overall strength of the national team. Recent examples include defender Mis Iqbal Hergis and midfielder Eliano Reinders, who have officially become Indonesian citizens and are expected to represent the country in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The issue of naturalized players has sparked extensive discussions and controversies within Indonesian society. On one hand, supporters believe that naturalization can quickly improve the competitive level of the national team; on the other hand, opponents worry that it may affect the long-term development and socialization of Indonesian football. Facing such differences, the FA is challenged to ensure the healthy development of the domestic football system while improving the national team’s performance.
