On July 22, Chelsea Football Club officially announced the signing of 19-year-old American full-back Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United of Major League Soccer (MLS). The deal is for six years with an option to extend for an additional year.
Caleb Wiley was born in December 2004 and is not yet 20 years old. On the pitch, he can play multiple positions including left-back, left wing-back, and even left winger, making him a versatile player on the flank.
To date, Wiley has made a total of 77 appearances for Atlanta United in MLS, scoring six goals and providing five assists. Additionally, he has been included in the US squad for the upcoming Olympics, where his performance will be one to watch.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea secured his signature by paying a release clause of £8.5 million to Atlanta United. He is not expected to join Chelsea’s first-team squad next season and may instead be loaned out to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 for a year of development.
