On September 21, according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United has confirmed that it will appoint Sir Norman Foster, the architect behind the national stadium and the German Reichstag building, to be responsible for the overall planning of the areas surrounding Old Trafford Stadium. Manchester United hopes to transform the land around Old Trafford Stadium, which is owned by the club, into a world-class football sanctuary.
Currently, Sir Foster’s architectural firm is overseeing the renovation of the Carrington training base, a project costing up to £50 million. Following this, Sir Foster may also be responsible for constructing a new £2 billion stadium for Manchester United or for the comprehensive renovation of Old Trafford Stadium, depending on which option the club chooses. Manchester United stated that the current appointment is limited to the areas surrounding Old Trafford Stadium and does not currently involve the stadium itself.
Sir Foster expressed pride in this appointment: “As a Mancunian, I am proud to be involved in the redevelopment here. With the great Old Trafford Stadium, I also have the opportunity to create a vibrant multi-functional community around it, improve transportation services, and provide housing and employment opportunities for the local community.”
