On the evening of August 7, UEFA officially announced that Rodri and Morata were suspended for one match for violating UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.
After Spain’s 2-1 victory over England to win the European Championship, Morata and Rodri chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the celebration upon their return, which led to a complaint from the Gibraltar Football Association.
UEFA’s reasoning for the punishment was that Rodri and Morata failed to adhere to the code of conduct, violating basic rules of good behavior, using a sporting event for non-sporting activities, and damaging the reputation of football and particularly UEFA.
