A new rule in this Euro Cup stipulates that only the team captain can lodge a complaint with the referee, while other players risk a yellow card. Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk spoke to Dutch media NOS about the regulation.
“It won’t change much for me because I’m always shouting on the pitch, but I’m glad I’m the captain, otherwise it could have been complicated. Other players now have to be careful, and hopefully we’re smart enough not to get booked,” Van Dijk said. “Sometimes it can take the passion out of the game, of course I understand that having everyone barking at the referee isn’t ideal.”
“I’m not nervous, I’m really looking forward to this match and hope to fight for my country alongside my teammates.”
