Owen: If Southgate leaves, I think we could try Potter

According to The Sun, former England international Michael Owen suggested on a TV show that the national team should consider Potter if Southgate steps down.

Owen believes that after the Euros, regardless of the outcome, Southgate will part ways with England amicably. He said, “I can imagine that, come what may, England and Southgate will part as friends. If England wins the championship, Southgate would be leaving at the top of his game. He would relish this process. He might even be preparing to switch lanes. The general consensus among England fans is that this tournament will be Southgate’s swan song.”

Following that, Owen discussed who should take over the England national team in the post-Southgate era. He said, “If Southgate departs, there isn’t an obvious standout candidate. Personally, I maintain that the England national team should still consider a homegrown coach. At the club level, you can choose players and head coaches from any country. But when it comes to the national team, I believe your own nation should be led by one of its own. That’s what being a national team means. I think the available and viable option right now is Potter. Besides Potter, I also think Cooper is an excellent coach. Lampard and Gerrard have had their moments in the past, but they need to focus on their current jobs. Howe would be the best choice, but he’s not available. So, if Southgate leaves, my vote goes to Potter.”
