In the recently concluded Olympic men’s 100m freestyle final, Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle swam an astonishing 46.40 seconds, breaking the world record and clinching the gold in a dominant fashion. In his post-race interview, he made the following remarks:
“After we finished the first day of the 4x100m freestyle relay, I tried to greet Chalmers (the Australian swimmer) at the poolside, but he completely ignored me, just like Alexei from the American team. During training, our coach was on the deck, and Alexei would do somersaults that splashed water onto the coach, which seemed to show a lack of respect for us. Can I say this?
Really, today I finally took them all down, and in such a tough pool, I broke the world record. It was truly an excellent performance, securing a great start for the Chinese team.
I never even thought about the world record, I just wanted to go all out at the start and fight hard to hold my position in the latter part of the race. Today, in the last 15 meters, I realized they were too far behind to catch up! Holding my breath, I felt the hopes of so many people from our country right before I dove into the water!”
