Premier League Preview: Tottenham Aims for First Home Win of the Season Against Struggling Everton

On August 24th at 22:00, in the second round of the Premier League, Tottenham hosts Everton. Neither team managed to secure a win in their first league match, with Tottenham targeting their first victory of the season and Everton hoping to bounce back from a three-goal defeat in their opener.

In the first round, Tottenham drew 1-1 away against Leicester City. With their first home game of the season, they face an Everton side that is struggling both in terms of strength and form, aiming to secure their first win. Last season, Tottenham finished fifth in the league, just two points behind Aston Villa. This season, the team will strive for qualification to the Champions League.

Tottenham invested significantly during the summer transfer window, including a €10 million acquisition of Berraval, a €41.25 million signing of Archie Gray, a €64.3 million addition of Solanke, and a €29.3 million recruitment of Odoi-Bright. Major departures included Emerson being sold to AC Milan for €15 million and Skipp moving to Leicester City for €23.5 million.

Last season, Everton was deducted a total of eight points for breaching the PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) but still managed to avoid relegation. As a traditional powerhouse in the Premier League, Everton has recently fallen into the relegation battle. In the first match of this season, Everton suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to Brighton, ending up at the bottom of the table and sounding an early warning bell for the team.

Everton’s investment this summer was not significant, with major signings including Ilogbu for €10.7 million, Ndaiye for €18 million, and O’Brien for €19.5 million. In terms of departures, Godfrey was sold to Atalanta for €12 million, Dobbin to Aston Villa for €11.8 million, and Onana to Aston Villa for €59.35 million, leading to a slight weakening of the overall strength of the team.

However, bad news for the home team is that new signing forward Solanke has encountered injury issues, and the head coach has confirmed he will miss this match. Midfielder Bentancur is also expected to be absent due to injury. Additionally, Ashley Young of Everton will be suspended due to a red card.

In past encounters, Tottenham holds a clear advantage with 62 wins, 52 draws, and 47 losses; at Tottenham’s home ground, the record is 42 wins, 23 draws, and 15 losses in favor of Tottenham.
