Premier League Referees’ Chief Requests All Referees to Disclose Supported Teams to Avoid Controversy from Last Season with Nottingham Forest

Recently, Howard Webb, the head of the Premier League referees’ company, stated in an interview that to increase transparency in refereeing decisions in the Premier League, all referees will be asked to disclose which teams they support.

The reason for implementing this measure can be traced back to last season: after the match between Nottingham Forest and Everton, Nottingham Forest released a statement lambasting referee Stuart Attwell for bias, suggesting that as a Luton fan, he hoped to give Luton an advantage by making unfavorable calls against relegation rival Nottingham Forest.

Webb said, “Before the start of this season, we asked referees to state whether they have a clearly supported team. We must make this information public so that reviews of refereeing decisions in the future can be more fair.”

“We will also seriously evaluate and take these factors into consideration when assigning referees.”
