Preview: Gamba Osaka face defensive issues, while Urawa Reds' captain eyes A-League move

On June 15 at 6 pm, J1 League Matchday 18 sees Gamba Osaka host rivals Urawa Red Diamonds.

In their previous J1 League fixture on June 1, Gamba drew 1-1 away to Kyoto Sanga. Striker Caio Silva scored in the first half, but Gamba struggled to create chances after that and conceded an equalizer in a chaotic defensive moment. Manager Kenta Kikuchi acknowledged the team’s struggles with injuries, saying, “We’ve been held back by injuries, but we’re still searching for ways to get back to our best.” However, Gamba’s defense faltered again as they lost 3-5 on aggregate to Machida Zelvia in the following J.League Cup knockout stage, leaving fans disappointed.

Gamba currently sit ninth in the J1 League table with six wins, seven draws, and four losses, trailing the championship contenders by six points. Despite this, they have earned 13 points from eight home matches, demonstrating solid home form. In the Emperor’s Cup Round of 16, Gamba defeated J-Lease FC 3-1 at home, giving their reserve players valuable match experience.

Sidelined for this match is key right-back Mewata Shiroya, who has left for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Youngster Yuto Otomo might deputize at right-back, while left-back Takahiro Ogihara and central defender Ryohei Yamanaka are both injured, leaving significant gaps in Gamba’s backline.

Urawa drew 1-1 with Vissel Kobe in their last league match. Substitute star Shoya Nakajima orchestrated a late equalizer with a composed long-range strike, while winter signing Sørloth looked promising on his first start, providing the assist for Nakajima’s goal. Manager Thomas Høgli praised Sørloth’s performance.

Urawa are eighth in the standings with seven wins, four draws, and six losses, six points adrift of the top three. Their away record stands at two wins, two draws, and four losses, ranking them 16th in away performance. However, without any cup fixtures during the break, Urawa have had time to work on tactics and maintain fresh legs.

The team will miss midfielder Gustavsson due to a thigh injury sustained with the Swedish national team. Additionally, captain Keisuke Honda is reportedly set to join A-League newcomers Auckland City FC, presenting a double blow for Urawa. On a positive note, domestic attacker Takahiro Sekine has returned to training and should be available for selection.

In their last 20 encounters, Gamba hold a favorable record of 10 wins, five draws, and five losses. To triumph at home, Gamba must overcome their defensive shortages, while Urawa will seek to snatch a point despite their inconsistent away form.
