Preview: Rivals Clash in Copa América - Will Argentina, the Defending Champions, Be Upset?

On June 26th at 9am, the Copa América will host a Group A match between Chile and Argentina.

Chile, once a South American powerhouse, now ranks 42nd in the world, having fallen out of the elite teams’ category. Less than a decade ago, they were consecutive Copa América champions, but recently, the team has failed to secure any significant victories. Heading into this tournament, they hope to recapture their past glory and achieve a favorable outcome.

In the previous South American World Cup Qualifiers, Chile managed only one win, two draws, and three losses, securing five points and sitting at the bottom third of the group. They scored just three goals while conceding seven, a stark contrast to the attacking and defensively solid team that they used to be. In their opening Copa América match, they drew 0-0 with Peru, creating few clear-cut chances.

Argentina, currently ranked 1st in the world, is the top favorite to win the Copa América. With stars like Messi, Martínez, and Alavéz, the team boasts a well-balanced mix of experienced and young talents, backed by their 15 Copa América titles. They are determined to defend their title.

The Albiceleste dominated the South American World Cup Qualifiers, winning five and losing one, amassing 15 points at the top of the table. While their eight goals scored weren’t overly impressive, their defense, led by Martínez, conceded only two goals, making it a formidable backline. Argentina started the Copa América with a 2-0 victory over Canada, with Lautaro and Alavéz in fine form, and Messi providing an assist, indicating their attacking unit is firing on all cylinders.

Group A also includes Peru, ranked 32nd, and Canada, ranked 49th. Aside from Argentina, the other three teams are closely matched, and the battle for the second spot in the group could be intense. With Peru and Chile each on one point, Argentina on three, and Canada without points after their first defeat, a loss for Chile would set up a decisive final match. A draw would significantly improve their position.

The historical encounters between Argentina and Chile have been numerous, with Argentina holding the upper hand in the last ten meetings (five wins, five draws), though never by more than a one-goal margin. Given their rivalry, any outcome is possible, and an upset by Chile over the defending champions cannot be ruled out.
