On September 19, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) officially announced that PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir met with the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, in Jakarta today. The department expressed support for policies such as player naturalization to promote the national team’s efforts to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Supratman stated, “With the support provided by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, especially in terms of naturalization, we hope to make a real contribution to Indonesia’s efforts to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.”
The PSSI chairman emphasized, “The naturalization plan is part of our efforts to improve the performance of the Indonesian national team. Even though naturalization is also a way of honor, Indonesia is not the only country doing this; countries like the Netherlands, Spain, and France also practice it.”
“The measures taken by the PSSI are not limited to short-term plans, all plans are consistent with the cultivation of young players.”
It is understood that relevant departments held a plenary session on Thursday to decide on the citizenship of two players becoming Indonesian citizens, and then made a final decision. Previously, there were reports that two Dutch players, Eliano Reinders and Mees Hilgers, will take an oath to become Indonesian citizens in the near future and appear in the World Cup qualifiers in October.
