Recently, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on his personal social media that Scottish Premiership side Celtic is set to sign Denmark captain Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year deal with an option for renewal.
Following the end of last season, Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart announced his retirement, making the search for a new goalkeeper a top priority for manager Brendan Rodgers in this summer’s transfer market. The 37-year-old Schmeichel is currently a free agent, as his contract with Anderlecht expired at the end of June. There had been rumors linking him to a move to Saudi Arabia, but the Dane now appears more inclined to reunite with former boss Rodgers in the Scottish league.
Celtic has offered Schmeichel a one-year contract with a priority renewal clause. This looks to be a shrewd acquisition for Celtic, given Schmeichel’s commendable performance in the recent European Championship. Additionally, his prior experience working with Rodgers should facilitate his integration into the team and adjustment to the tactics.
Schmeichel made 479 appearances for Leicester City, being a key goalkeeper in their Premier League title-winning campaign. This may well be the last contract of Schmeichel’s playing career, and he will aim to achieve success at Celtic akin to that of Joe Hart.
