The Transfermarkt website notes that, as of the evening of August 6th, local time in Europe, Premier League clubs have spent a total of €1.31 billion on transfer fees, significantly higher than the second-placed Serie A (€631.6 million) among the top five leagues. Six teams have broken their own club records for transfer fees.
These six teams are: Aston Villa signing Amadou Onana from Everton for €59.4 million; Nottingham Forest signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United for €41.7 million; Brighton & Hove Albion signing Jakub Mintal for €35 million; Brentford signing Igor Thiago from Club Brugge for €33 million; Fulham signing Smith Rowe from Arsenal for €31.8 million; and Ipswich Town signing Omari Hutchinson from Chelsea for €23 million.
The media has also compiled a list of the highest transfer fees paid by all 20 current Premier League teams. For Chelsea, it is Enzo Fernández (January 2022, €121 million, Benfica). Manchester City’s record is Jack Grealish (Summer 2021, €117.5 million, Aston Villa). Arsenal’s record is Jorginho (Summer 2023, €116.6 million, West Ham United). Manchester United’s record is Paul Pogba (Summer 2016, €105 million, Juventus).
Liverpool’s record is Darwin Núñez (2022, €85 million, Benfica). Newcastle United’s record is Alexander Isak (€70 million, 2022, Real Sociedad). Tottenham Hotspur’s record is Tanguy Ndombele (2019-20 season, €59.4 million, Lyon). West Ham United’s record is Sébastien Haller (2019, €50 million, Eintracht Frankfurt). Wolverhampton Wanderers’ record is Matheus Cunha (2023, €50 million, Atlético Madrid).
Everton’s record is Gylfi Sigurðsson (2017-18 season, €49.4 million, Swansea City). Leicester City’s record is Youri Tielemans (2019-20 season, €45 million, Monaco). Crystal Palace’s record is Christian Benteke (2016-17 season, €31.2 million, Liverpool). AFC Bournemouth’s record is Jefferson Lerma (2018-19 season, €30.5 million, Levante). Southampton’s record is Tino Livramento (2021-22 season, €26.2 million, Chelsea).
