Spain's Women's Football Team Misses the Final! Goalkeeper Apologizes: "I Didn't Perform to My Level, I Did Nothing Well."

In the early hours of August 7, in the semi-final of the Paris Olympic women’s football tournament, Spain lost 2-4 to Brazil and missed out on a place in the final.

According to Spain’s Marca newspaper, after losing the semi-final to Brazil, the expressions on the faces of the Spanish team members in the mixed zone were heartbreaking. They looked serious, their eyes dimmed, and some were unable to control their emotions, clearly showing signs of frustration and disappointment.

Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll is known for her straightforward honesty, and she struggled to hold back tears when facing the media. “First of all, I want to apologize to everyone. I believe I didn’t meet the expectations of the team. Sometimes we are at our peak, sometimes we hit rock bottom. Today I’m at a low point, but I am proud of my teammates. I think they fought until the end, trying to turn things around. I have to apologize to my teammates; today I did nothing well. This wasn’t my day, but there’s still an important match to play, and we will strive to win the bronze medal. Hopefully, we can do it.”

Just five minutes into the game, Coll’s mistake led to Brazil’s first goal. Her poor clearance was touched by Priscila and then Paredes, eventually rolling into the net. After that, she struggled to regain her form and was provoked by Brazilian players.

Coll complained about the opponents: “I think this Brazilian team lacks sportsmanship. It’s painful because they are also my colleagues. But they like to play this way; it’s their style, and it shouldn’t make us lose our rhythm. I must admit that at times, they did make me lose my cool. But it’s over now, and this match, personally, is one to forget.”

The Spanish goalkeeper’s anger was evident on her face, and she ultimately removed the mask protecting her injured nose. “I angrily took off the mask in the locker room and forgot about it. I apologize to my teammates and fans. Today I didn’t perform well, that’s a fact, but we still have an important match to play, and I hope I can win it.”

Spain will compete against Germany for the bronze medal in three days. “We have three days. It’s over now. We won’t sleep well tonight. It will be a tough day, but Spain is still here, Spain is still fighting, and we will go for the bronze. We will fight for it, please don’t doubt that.”
