According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente recently announced the squad for the September Nations League matches. Among many stars who participated in Euro 2024, only Nacho was “unjustifiably” left out of the first training squad after winning the championship, which has made him very dissatisfied.
According to reports, this former Real Madrid central defender was shocked by his exclusion from the national team and had originally thought he would continue to be selected.
Although Nacho was not a core player of the “La Roja” during the European Championship, this 34-year-old veteran still contributed to the team’s success. Especially in the semi-final match against France, Nacho started and came on as a substitute several times in key matches throughout the tournament. He believes that he is the only player inexplicably excluded from the list, while other excluded Euro champions were either due to suspension or injury.
Nacho stated that he is currently in good form and, after transferring to Saudi Arabian team Al-Dhahriya, helped the team achieve a clean sweep in the Saudi Professional League this season while keeping a clean sheet.
MARCA cited sources close to Nacho, saying that he was particularly dissatisfied when he learned that Joseelu, who also left European football to transfer to Qatar, was still called up by Luis de la Fuente into the national team.
Excluding Nacho due to his transfer to Saudi Arabia seems unconvincing. In subsequent interviews, Coach De La Fuente explained that Nacho’s exclusion was based on tactical considerations. The head coach of the Spanish national team believes that after winning the European Championship, adjustments need to be made to the defensive line.
