Spanish Media: Southgate Has No Future with England; Euro Final Could Be His Farewell

On July 16, Marca published an article discussing the future of England’s head coach, Gareth Southgate, suggesting that the Euro final could be his last match in charge of the Three Lions.

The Spanish outlet stated: “Southgate’s future remains uncertain. He has led the team to two consecutive Euro finals but suffered defeat on both occasions. England lost to Italy in the 2021 Euro final and to Spain in the 2024 edition. It is now questionable whether he will lead the team into the 2026 World Cup. Southgate’s contract with the English national team expires in December this year, and it is unclear if he wishes to continue coaching the Three Lions.”

Regarding the historical milestones achieved by Southgate: “He has become only the third manager in history to take charge of over a hundred matches for England, following Walter Winterbottom (139 games) and Alf Ramsey (113 games). Southgate has also represented England more times than anyone else, managing the senior team in 102 matches, playing 57 games as a player for the national side, and leading the U21 team in 37 matches. In total, he has participated in 196 international fixtures as either a player or a coach.”

Marca further indicated skepticism about Southgate’s renewal: “Notable figures from English football, including Shearer, Lineker, and Ferdinand, do not foresee Southgate continuing as England’s coach. The Euro final against Spain could very well be his swansong as England’s manager.”
