In the Round of 16 of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, England defeated Slovakia 2-1, with Jude Bellingham scoring a remarkable bicycle kick in the 95th minute to force extra time, ultimately helping England advance to the quarterfinals against Switzerland.
Following Bellingham’s goal, Argentine football star Sergio Agüero launched a social media poll asking fans who should win the Ballon d’Or for this year. He listed four candidates: Vinícius Júnior (Brazil), Kylian Mbappé (France), Bellingham (England), and Lionel Messi (Argentina).
The poll results showed Messi leading with 39% of the votes, followed by Vinícius Júnior (35.9%), Bellingham (19.6%), and Mbappé with only 5.5%.
Alongside the voting, various comments were posted by users, with some questioning Agüro’s selection of candidates, suggesting, “If Messi is on the list, then Agüero should be too.” Other fans stated, “If Kroos wins the Euros, he deserves the Ballon d’Or,” while some firmly believed, “There’s no doubt Messi should win the Ballon d’Or.”
When will the 2024 Ballon d’Or be awarded?
The French football magazine L’Équipe and its parent company Amaury Group announced that starting in 2024, they would collaborate with UEFA to establish a new Ballon d’Or ceremony, which will take place on October 28 in Paris.
