English center-back Stones believes his Manchester City and England teammate Foden will have a standout performance at this year’s European Championship.
Despite scoring just four goals in his 34 international appearances, not replicating his consistent club form for the Three Lions, Stones thinks Foden will showcase his talents on the German soil over the next month. “I am biased towards Phil, but I genuinely believe he is an incredible player,” Stones said. “The way he plays the game is so relaxed and fluid – like a stroll in the park. He brings so many different elements to a game, and it’s been a successful season for him. I hope and believe he’ll bring that into the Euros.”
Stones also feels that Foden’s unfortunate absence from the previous Euro final due to injury has deprived football fans of witnessing his abilities on the big stage. “Missing the latter stages of Euro 2020 through a foot injury held him back to some extent, but he doesn’t let outside noise affect him; he’s solely focused on his football. I’m hoping he can do what he does for his club and be proud to represent his country,” he added.
With Premier League top scorer Kane and La Liga Player of the Year Bellingham in the squad, Stones thinks this could alleviate pressure on Foden. “It’s a positive for Phil because maybe not all the defensive attention will be on him. In these situations, it’s an opportunity to step up and show what he can really do – perhaps it’s time for the world to see that,” he commented.
