On the evening of October 28, Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United came to an end. The club officially announced that the Dutch manager had “resigned from his position as head coach of Manchester United’s first team.” Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as interim manager until a permanent successor is found. The recent 1-2 loss to West Ham United directly led to Ten Hag’s departure.
Since the start of the 2024-2025 season, Manchester United’s performance has been far from satisfactory. Currently, they are only in 14th place in the Premier League, having accumulated just 11 points in nine matches; their situation in the Europa League is also concerning, with only 3 points from three group stage games.
Ten Hag’s contract with Manchester United still had 21 months left. According to The Athletic (TA), the 54-year-old coach previously had an annual salary of around £9 million, but this amount was reduced due to the team’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
TA reports that the details of the severance package Ten Hag might receive have not been disclosed, but it is certain that replacing the head coach will come at a significant cost to the club, expected to exceed £10 million and could be as high as £16 million, much higher than if he had left in the summer.
For comparison, in 2018, Manchester United paid a total of £19.6 million to sack José Mourinho and his staff, a figure that was revealed in the club’s financial report. In 2016, when Louis van Gaal and his team left with one year remaining on their contract, they received £8.4 million in compensation.
In addition, there will be additional costs associated with bringing in a new head coach.
